How to track vehicles using VIN barcodes
All vehicles manufactured after 1981 have a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) barcode. You can scan the VIN barcode using the free Orca Scan barcode app to record inspections, vehicle movements and more in real-time.
How to track VIN barcodes using Orca Scan
Using Orca Scan with the Vehicle Tracking template turns Orca Scan into a VIN barcode scanner app. Each scan provides you with detailed information about such as make, model, year of manufacture. Additional information such as vehicle condition, GPS location and mileage can then be entered to help maintain a fully visible audit log of a vehicles life.
To get started:
- Download the Orca Scan barcode scanner app
- Create a new sheet using the Vehicle Tracking template
- Scan a VIN barcode on a vehicle
- Enter the required information
- Save the changes
You can now view your entire fleet of vehicles, including current location, mileage, inspection history, and who carried out the inspections in real-time using the Orca Scan web application.
Where is the VIN barcode located?
The VIN Barcode is typically found in one of the following locations:
- Bottom corner of the front window screen
- Inside of driver or passenger door post
- Front panel of the engine compartment
What information does a VIN barcode contain?
A VIN barcode contains the following information:
- Country of manufacture
- Vehicle manufacturer
- Vehicle type of devision
- Vehicles brand, body style, engine size and type
- Model year
- Assembly plant
- Vehicles serial number
