Animating the perfect blend of barcode tracking

Orca Scan recently partnered with Masteroast, one of the UK’s largest coffee importers and roasters, to create an animation showcasing how barcode scanning powers their production workflow.

The animation was created for the 2025 Retail Supply Chain & Logistics Expo to demonstrate the business impact of digitising data capture across operations.

It visually follows the journey of coffee through the facility from the arrival of green coffee beans to roasting, packing, and dispatch. At every stage, Orca Scan captures the data that keeps the process moving.

Each scan records key information about the batch, creating a digital record of production activity across the facility. This gives the team full visibility of the process while maintaining traceability and compliance.

Building on the Masteroast Customer Story

Masteroast’s use of Orca Scan was first shared in their original customer story, which explains how digitising production tracking improved operational visibility and increased cash flow by over £100,000.

The Retail Supply Chain & Logistics Expo gave us an opportunity to bring that workflow to life visually, and we even got a visit from Matt Osborne, Senior Business Development Manager at Masteroast, to see it all in action!

Why Traceability Matters in Coffee Production

Coffee production involves multiple stages, from importing green beans to roasting, packaging, and dispatch.

Without a digital system, many producers rely on paper records or spreadsheets to track these stages, which can make it difficult to:

By digitising production data capture with barcode scanning, companies like Masteroast can record activity as it happens and maintain a complete audit trail of every batch.

Five Years of Orca Scan at Masteroast

The expo also coincided with the celebration of five years since Masteroast first implemented Orca Scan.

To mark the milestone, we asked Fred Pryor, Operations Director at Masteroast, to reflect on the impact Orca Scan has had on the business:

“The team loves using Orca Scan. It’s simple to use and far less prone to mistakes than pen and paper. It gives the team ownership, transparency and visibility of the entire process at any point in time.

Orca gives us robust audit trails - traceability of every bean, every batch, who has done what and when. This supports food compliance, quality control and even helps manage team performance.

Customer and employee satisfaction has increased because our team can instantly update customers on the progress of their orders, saving time and hassle for everyone.

Our leadership team monitor trends and gains valuable insights from the data captured, which we export to Excel for analysis.

Tracking every stage of production with Orca Scan has delivered visibility, customer satisfaction, profitability and improved compliance and risk management.”
