Why track cars by their VINs using a barcode system?
All vehicles manufactured after 1981 have a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) barcode.
Using Orca Scan with the Vehicle Tracking template allows Orca Scan to track a car by VIN. Each scan provides you with detailed information such as make, model, and year of manufacture. Additional information such as vehicle condition, GPS location and mileage can then be entered to help maintain a fully visible audit log of a vehicles life.
Accurate tracking of VIN barcode tracking is essential for maintenance, tracking vehicle journeys and understanding the location of each vehicle in your fleet.
How can I track cars by VIN using Orca Scan?
To get started with tracking VIN barcodes, you can:
- Download the Orca Scan barcode scanner app
- Create a new sheet using the Vehicle Tracking template
- Scan a VIN barcode on a vehicle
- Enter the required information
- Save the changes
You can now view your entire fleet of vehicles, including current location, mileage, inspection history, and who carried out the inspections in real-time using the Orca Scan web application.
Can I use Orca Scan to track a stolen vehicle?
No, this solution cannot locate stolen vehicles using just the VIN. The GPS location is only updated when the VIN is scanned, meaning you must be physically near the vehicle at the time of scanning. It cannot track vehicles after they go missing.
Where's the VIN barcode on a vehicle?
The VIN Barcode is typically found in one of the following locations:
- Bottom corner of the front window screen
- Inside of driver or passenger door post
- The front panel of the engine compartment
VIN tracking software: what data is in a VIN barcode?
A VIN barcode contains the following information:
- Country of manufacture
- Vehicle manufacturer
- Vehicle type of division
- Vehicles brand, body style, engine size and type
- Model year
- Assembly plant
- Vehicles serial number
Can I set up damage alerts in Orca Scan when I track a car by its VIN?
Orca Scan’s triggers feature enables automatic email notifications to specified users when an item is marked as ‘Damaged’ in your sheets, complete with details and photos provided by the inspector.
