John Doherty: Founder & CEO at Orca Scan photo

I taught myself to code on a ZX Spectrum when I was 11 and have been building things ever since. I spent two decades writing software for companies in Cambridge, trying to build a company in my spare time, but realised every product I launched failed because I wasn’t talking to users - I was building in isolation. That all changed when my son took a summer job that needed barcode scanning, we couldn’t find a simple tool that worked, so we built one. That weekend project became Orca Scan.

Today Orca Scan is used by thousands of companies around the world, including some of the biggest names in tech, pharma, and automotive. We raised a small angel round early on, but have since grown entirely from customer revenue. Staying independent has allowed us to focus on building a product people genuinely find useful, without the distraction of chasing funding rounds.

I believe in keeping things simple, listening to feedback, and surrounding myself with good people. I still write code most days, go for long runs when I’m stuck, and walk my kids to school every morning. My goal is to make Orca Scan the default way to work with barcodes - on any device, in any industry, in any language and from anywhere in the world.
