What is a EAN-8 barcode?
EAN-8 is a compact version of the EAN-13 barcode, part of the GS1 system, primarily used for smaller products where space is limited. Like EAN-13, EAN-8 is widely utilized in retail to identify products globally and is compatible with the UPC system. It encodes 8 numeric digits, making it suitable for identifying items like small packages or individual units in larger products.
How much data can a EAN 8 barcode hold?
An EAN-8 barcode holds exactly 8 numeric digits. These digits include a country code (GS1 prefix), a manufacturer code, and a product code. The final digit is a check digit used for error detection. EAN-8 is ideal for smaller items where a full-sized barcode like EAN-13 or UPC-A wouldn’t fit, while still maintaining compatibility with global retail systems.
