VIN Barcode Decoder
How to extract data from a VIN barcode
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) barcodes are used to uniquely identify vehicles, aiding in vehicle recovery and the identification of manufacturing defects. Enter a VIN barcode value to see a detailed breakdown of the encoded information.
What information does a VIN barcode contain?
A VIN barcode contains the World Manufacturer Index (WMI) which specifies the manufacturing company and manufacturing location of the vehicle, the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) which specifies attributes of the vehicle like engine type and airbag type and the Vehicle Indicator Section (VIS) acting as a unique identifier for each vehicle. The VDS and VIS are assigned by the manufacturer.
